Google Agent

Google Travel Design Competition

Date: April 2019

Scope: UI/UX, Design Research, Strategy

Collaborators: Samip jain, Chris Lloyd, Helena Bryones

Challenge

A new generation of digital travelers are reinventing how travel is planned and executed. As DIY travel planning has become the norm, the challenge is allowing travelers to receive a personalized, organized, and quality experience.

Approach

Through this design challenge, we conducted research into the traveler’s planning process and how it affected their final trip. We looked into the competitive landscape and how our system would integrate with Google’s product ecosystem. We sketched rough concepts that we then used for user testing. After the prioritized features were selected, I then led the mockup design using Sketch. Using the mockup, I shot a demo video of the UI and how the user would use Google Agent.

User Insights

Research, trello.jpeg

Digitally native travelers use tools like Trello and Google Docs to plan their trips. They list different activities to prioritize things to do but leave some flexibility. They follow a cycle of research and listing to find the optimal options for their travel style. They juggle different factors such as price and timing and the plan can quickly become disorganized. Additionally, getting multiple travelers traveling together to agree is also a great challenge.

Competitive Advantage

The goal of Google Agent is to provide the best of both worlds by offering tailored recommendations based on individuals travel constraints. This reduces the cognitive load and better organizes activities while traveling.

User Journey & Workflow

Travelers will follow a task hierarchy of setting general parameters starting with larger constraints such as dates and location. They will then start listing options for activities, accommodations, and restaurants. As they brainstorm, they will edit down options by collaborating with other travelers, conducting more research, and changing things on the fly when at the destination.

UI Mockup

When a traveler begins a trip, they set the parameters starting with the biggest constraints such as location, date, and number of people. They can then set preferences within the parameters based on their travel style.

Google Agent uses AI to recommend activities based off of your set parameters and past travel profile. It will automatically generate an itinerary to fit the preset parameters and personal profile of the traveler. Of course, travelers can still edit and swap activities and create custom activities. Google Agent is personalized, integrated, and collaborative.
